Clarity

Day 10 video - Stress the Words That Carry Meaning (Clarity)

Stress the words that carry meaning so listeners catch your key points effortlessly.

What this lesson covers

Flat, monotone sentences hide your key points. The lesson explains sentence stress in stress-timed languages, the split between content words and function words, and how shifting stress onto the right word changes the meaning of a whole sentence — finishing with a three-step practice drill.

Practice plan for this lesson

Written by The Articulate Method for this website. It is extra practice around the video, not a transcript of it.

  1. NoticeBefore you practise, speak for 30 seconds on a familiar topic and listen for the clarity habit this lesson describes: “Stress the words that carry meaning so listeners catch your key points effortlessly.”
  2. TrySpeak the same 30 seconds again and apply the technique once, deliberately. One attempt is enough.
  3. PractiseRun three short rounds of 20 to 30 seconds. Change the topic each round so your attention stays on the clarity technique, not the words.
  4. RecordRecord 60 seconds in one take. Do not restart after a mistake, and do not delete the file.
  5. ReviewListen once. Name one observable change, and one place today where you will use it in a real conversation.

Short exercise: stress the meaning words (5 minutes)

  1. 1. Mark the content words (1 min)Write this sentence and underline only the words that carry the meaning: “I didn’t say we should cancel the meeting.”
  2. 2. Shift the stress (2 min)Say the sentence five times, stressing a different word each time — I, didn’t, say, cancel, meeting. Notice how the meaning changes with every shift.
  3. 3. Say it naturally (1 min)Say the sentence once more, stressing only the content words and gliding over the small function words. It should sound rhythmic, not robotic.
  4. 4. Apply it (1 min)Record yourself answering “What is your main priority this week?” for 30 seconds, stressing the key words in each sentence as you go.

Worksheet: stress the words that carry meaning

Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

1. Underline the content words

Underline the words that carry the meaning, then say each sentence aloud.

  1. “Our results improved because the team changed the process.”
  2. “I need the final report by Friday, not Monday.”
  3. “This option costs less and takes half the time.”

2. Shift the stress

Say “I didn’t say we should cancel the meeting” five times, stressing a different word each time. Write what each version means.

I …

didn’t …

say …

cancel …

meeting …

3. Your own sentence

Write one sentence you will say this week (at work, in an interview, or a presentation). Underline the two or three words you will stress.

4. Record and reflect

Record a 30-second answer to “What is your main priority this week?”, then listen back once.

  • ☐ Did the key words stand out clearly from the small words?
  • ☐ Did any sentence sound flat, with every word equally loud?
  • ☐ Did the stress sound natural rather than forced?

Which word did I stress best?

Where did my message sound flat?

Lesson questions

How long should I practise this lesson?

Set aside 10 to 15 minutes: watch the lesson once, record the speaking task, then review the recording once.

Do I need to restart when I make a mistake?

No. Continue speaking after a mistake so you practise recovery and fluency rather than perfection.

How will I know whether the lesson is working?

Compare your recordings and identify one observable change in clarity, pace, structure, pronunciation, or delivery.
